This new school is located on a site adjacent to the existing EPA Building on the Callan Road, Kilkenny, and is a “special needs” school with an overall floor area of 2,688m2. It will cater for 78 pupils and 50 staff.
Following the appointment of Callaghan Engineering by the Department of Education and Science as the Mechanical and Electrical consultants for the project, official team meetings with the Department’s architects took place in late 2006 to develop strategies for the Mechanical and Electrical packages.
Due to the special needs of the pupils, all the mechanical and electrical outlets were to be flush mounted or recessed in the wall so as to avoid any sharp edges in the classrooms and corridors. Lighting levels in classrooms and therapy rooms was also considered and taken into account.
Planning permission was granted in early 2007 and work started on site in 2008. The project was completed in August 2009.
