Donal O’Callaghan, Managing Director
Donal qualified from University College Dublin as a Chemical Engineer in 1973, and has over 40 years experience spanning manufacturing, engineering and construction industries. He has worked extensively abroad, mainly in the Middle East, Africa and North America.
In 1990 he co-founded Callaghan Engineering, a multi-discipline engineering and project management firm specialising in projects in the biopharmaceutical, medical devices, data centre, commercial, healthcare, educational, leisure and Government agency sectors.
In his role as Managing Director he has overall responsibility for all company operations.
He has specialist expertise in process engineering, project management and in cost control of multi-million euro projects. In addition, Donal has acquired specialist expertise in environmental consultancy, principally in relation to air and water pollution control and is a Professional Consultant to An Bord Pleanalá.
He has a particular interest in the Asian market, and served as chairman of the Ireland China Association for a two year term in 2005 and 2006. More recently he is developing markets and working on projects in the Benelux/Germany regions and in the UK.
Declan Hughes, Director of Projects & Business Development
Declan Hughes is an engineer with over 30 years’ experience in engineering design, construction, manufacturing, procurement and sustaining activities. He has expertise in general management, project management, construction management, cost control and process engineering. He has participated in the design and construction of a wide variety of projects in the industrial, commercial and public sector fields. Projects have ranged in value from less than €100K to over €500 million.
Declan joined Callaghan Engineering in the role of Director of Projects in 2013 with responsibility for managing a team of project managers who are overseeing the delivery of all projects within the firm. Declan ensures that projects are managed from a schedule, cost and quality of service perspective to achieve optimum performance of the team.
Ian Whitfield, Chief Executive Officer
Ian is a chartered electrical engineer with 30 years’ industry experience
Ian is an Accredited Tier Designer with the Uptime Institute and was one of the first outside of Uptime’s own consultants to achieve ATD status in 2009; having designed and delivered many data centres throughout EMEA, three of which were firsts of their type to be Uptime certified - the first Tier III certified Data Centre outside of the US; the first Tier IV data centre in Europe and the first Tier III full fresh air modular data centre. A number of these projects have also been awarded for their innovation and energy efficiency by both UK and US based awarding bodies. These projects typically span a variety of client types – enterprise, colocation, hyperscale, educational institutions and research organisations.
Ian has also designed and managed projects and client portfolios such as, mixed-use developments, superstores and highly serviced offices including the occasional unusual project such as indoor Ski Slopes!
In late 2004, Ian set up Red Engineering Design (RED) with four colleagues, taking up the Managing Directors role for RED’s European business in 2011 and more recently CEO for the RED Group.
In 2019, RED joined Engie Impact, with Ian taking a leadership role on Impact's ExCom, providing him with the ideal platform to help global clients accelerate their transformation towards a genuinely sustainable future.
Mark Smith, Managing Director – EMEA
Mark Smith has 30 years of experience in the building services industry and throughout his career has been involved in diverse projects across the UK and Europe.
An accredited Tier Designer and Chartered Engineer, in 2020 Mark was awarded Fellowship of the IET and a Fellow of CIBSE.
Mark is an experienced Building Services Engineer and project Director. Mark has worked on a large number of data centre and mission critical projects as well as projects in the commercial, industrial, retail, educational, sports and healthcare sectors – a number of which have won industry awards.
Olivier Vander Auwera, Chief Financial Officer
Chief Financial Officer of RED, Olivier has over 18 years of financial experience, 11 of these years spent working within acquisitions, investments and financial advisory.
Olivier is experienced across a wide spectrum of business development activities (acquisitions, divestments, investments, project financing, arbitrations, partnerships), sectors (engineering, industrial services, electricity generation, electricity and gas transportation and distribution, water supply, green mobility), work environments and cultures.
Prior to joining RED in 2018, Olivier was part of Engie Latin America, heading the department of acquisitions, investments and financial advisory for Chile, Peru and Columbia. Key projects supervised over the years included development and financing of desalination projects, financing of green mobility, partial sell down and financing of transmission lines, setting up partnerships, bids for Power Purchase Agreements, investments in and acquisition of non-conventional renewable energy projects, acquisitions of CAM (LatAm wide service group) and gas stream (small scale regasification).
In his capacity of Chief Financial Officer at RED, Olivier is responsible for the management of the RED Group’s financial operations, including financial planning and analysis, risk management, accounting, treasury and optimisation of financial and business performance. He controls, supports and provides advice and assistance to the operational staff and to the management teams across the various regions.
