ICT Infrastructure – Site Engineer

To meet their continued expansion in the design of critical facilities such as data centres, RED ICT has a requirement for a site based ICT Infrastructure Design Engineer.

Reporting to the UK design production team lead and project management office, the successful candidate will demonstrate a combination of ICT and telecommunication infrastructure design coordination and technical project management and systems commissioning experience – in the bult environment.  The necessary ICT / telecommunications experience may have been gained by working for; an ICT/multi-disciplinary consultancy, an ICT systems or services vendor or manufacturer (for example data cabling), systems integration business, ICT/Telecommunications sub-contractor or related building services engineering industry.

As a key member of the existing ICT design team, the successful candidate will work closely with the RED Engineering design team members and other relevant project stakeholders.

This is predominantly a site based role operating throughout an entire construction project lifecycle.  It usually begins at the appointment of a general building contractor and ends upon completion of the construction process, building handover.

The role typically involves acting as ‘Employers Engineer or Resident Engineer’ with responsibility for the coordination of ICT design in new construction projects.  It involves helping the interpretation of technical specification documents and design drawings to ensure contractor compliance with the design intent, that best practices are being followed and to ensure quality is being delivered. The ‘Employers Engineer or Resident Engineer’ will be asked to represent the client’s best interests when engaging with the relevant project delivery parties and stakeholders, including the general contractor and specialist sub-contractors, i.e. data cabling installers, active network systems suppliers and telecoms contractors.

The role typically involves; contractor design coordination, construction administration, attendance at professional design team meetings, quality assurance, reviewing test results and commissioning monitoring.  It involves responding to engineering queries and technical questions from different trades.  It often involves change management and assisting other engineering trades in problem resolution and related to construction programme matters.

RED ICT offer a flexible office location in Dublin or London (due to COVID 19 office attendance is currently related to our ‘work from home’ policy,).

Role Responsibilities

Construction site duties typically include:

  • Ensure the necessary quality and timeliness standards are met consistent with agreed construction programme/project plan.
  • Responsible for the coordination of ICT infrastructure design packages, such as, written report documents, drawings, schematics, schedules, technical specifications, procurement packs.
  • Responsible for liaising with the UK based design team on specific design related queries.
  • Attending BIM coordination meetings to ensure that the general contractor and sub-contractors are coordinating to the highest standard.
  • Review and approval/rejection of contractor proposals, technical submittals, shop drawings against design intent, specifications and code/legislative restrictions.
  • Daily site walks to ensure that the installation is consistent with the design intent.
  • Maintaining a snagging log, producing punch lists and site progress reports.
  • Attending and reviewing Benchmarks for quality.
  • Review and approval/rejection of redline drawings and as-built drawings against the as-built condition of the installation.
  • Represent RED and the Clients best interests in meetings with the General Contractor and sub-contractors.
  • Ensures contractor installation work meets industry, legal and quality standards.
  • Coordination of ICT design with related trades, e.g. electrical and mechanical
  • Attend a minimum of 10% of testing and commissioning activities and review/approval of testing scripts and results.
  • Review and approval of O&M documentation.

We envisage the successful candidate will have the potential to develop their role in ICT engineering design work. For example, when not engaged in a site-based project role, typical design duties (undertaken from a RED office) would include:

  • Production of ICT infrastructure design packages, such as, written report documents, drawings, schematics, schedules, technical specifications, procurement packs.
  • Interpretation of 2D CAD design drawings and 3D Revit models in collaboration with the BIM department. An emphasis upon design coordination and clash detection is important.
  • Coordination of ICT design with related engineering disciplines, e.g. electrical and mechanical and participation in meetings with the client and relevant project stakeholders.

Role Requirements

  • Either:
    • Engineering degree in appropriate ICT infrastructure design engineering discipline with at least a minimum 2 years’ appropriate experience

    • A-Level secondary education, HNC/HND or CNIDP plus at minimum 4 years appropriate experience.
    • Appropriate experience includes:
      • Data cabling manufacture/contracting
      • IT /IP network systems integration
      • Network technology vendor/manufacturer
      • IT/Multi-disciplinary consulting firm
      • Construction project management

  • Previous project experience in ICT infrastructure for data centre construction; commercial building construction ICT infrastructure
