Eduardo Macarandang

BSc | Mechanical Engineer

I have a lot to be thankful to RED for its contribution to my professional career. I started in 2013 as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer, after completing my bachelor’s degree in the Philippines. I was trained in the sustainability department where I was able to learn how to calculate cooling and heating loads of a building using the IES VE Software. It was quite fulfilling as well for me to be able to  apply my acquired knowledge from my university to the work that I was doing.

A year later, I was promoted to a Junior Mechanical Engineer.  I have been involved in different retail, commercial, residential, hotel, casino, malls and data centre projects. RED provided me programmes to be able to learn on different engineering software such IES VE, Autocad, revit, duct sizing software and many more.

My career at RED didn’t stop in Manila as I was sent to London for training in 2015 for six months. This opportunity opened lots of doors.  Doors that showed me the things I can learn outside of my comfort zone. Working with a lead office was a remarkable experience. I was able to communicate directly with my London colleagues, join the meetings with the architects, structural engineers the clients which made my engineering skills and understanding broader.

After a year, I was promoted to a Mechanical Engineer. I was able to start a project with minimal guidance from my seniors. Then 3 years later, I felt fortunate to be trusted again as I was sent for secondment in our Oxford office. My role was to support them on one of their projects and I was able to understand the design approach for data centres. I was also able to understand some basic plumbing and fire proection designs. Thank you to all my colleagues in Manila, Singapore, Dubai and UK offices as they gave me a better and deeper understanding of the engineering design industry and the opportunity to be involved in multiple projects across different regions with different engineering codes and design approach. Today, I am planning to become a member of CIBSE and a Chartered Engineer.

A piece of advice to everyone, do not stop where you are now, keep on learning. Listen, talk, read and learn, then share, because everyday is a school day! Aim high and build your own empire.
